Cher Ami, which means “dear friend” in French, was a pigeon that became famous during World War I for its tenacity and the fact that it saved the lives of many French soldiers by carrying a message across enemy lines. Cher Ami was shot in the chest and leg - losing most of the leg to which its message was attached - but continued the half hour-long flight anyway, avoiding shrapnel and poison gas to deliver its message. Cher Ami was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, meaning “Cross of War” in French, for heroic service.
